Mungo’s Hi-Fi 12″s

In the wake of Mungo’s Hi-Fi’s recent tour of NZ we are currently stocking a range of their 12″ singles.  Apart from being Glasgow’s premier reggae sound system, Mungo’s have in recent years branched into the area of production presenting a great variety of vocalists old and new over their original digital roots and dancehall rhythms.  Released on their own Scotch Bonnet and Scrub A Dub labels, their productions range from 80′s style digital steppers through to 90′s dancehall and minimal dubstep beats.

AIAIAI Retro Headphones

 

Tracks Headphones are on-ear headphones inspired by the function and design of the old iconic walkman headphones.

The company AIAIAI was born out of Copenhagen’s nest of creativity known as the A-house. Apart from hosting a club on top of the old industrial building AIAIAI initiated a collective consisting of more than 200 young artists, musicians and designers in the years 2005-2006. The 4 partners of AIAIAI started off with a vision that hasn’t changed: Together with a variety of different people, designers, musicians, artists etc. We create earphones, headsets, headphones and other consumer electronic related products that makes a genuine statement.

Revolutionary jazz from the era of the civil rights movement and beyond.  This is an impeccably well chosen compilation and the set is an audio companion to Soul Jazz’s essential Freedom, Rhythm & Sound book of jazz record sleeve art curated by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker.  It documents the sounds and provides an aural portrait of a fertile creative period in African-American music and cultural history, when the societal struggles were a counterpart to the previously unseen depth of creativity and empowerment in jazz music.  It also includes a nice booklet of notes and photos and features songs from both the independent underground and some that made it onto established labels like Verve and others, including material by Joe Henderson, Archie Shepp, Errol Parker, Mary Lou Williams, Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Horace Tapscott, Sun Ra and many more. This album is jam-packed with super rare, deep jazz with many tracks running on the longer side for a straight up incredible set of spiritual soul-jazz.  Available on double CD with booklet or as two seperate double vinyl sets.

Stunning debut material from the very promising Emika, blooming the dark flowers of her ‘Drop The Other’ single on Ninja Tune backed with remixes from Scuba and GeRM. Emika’s sound is favorably compared to current dance-pop auteurs the XX, Burial and Fever Ray and we’ve got no argument with that. The forward-thinking craft of the original ‘Drop The Other’ evokes the timeless sophistication of her current home, Berlin, with tense, glass cut strings and stoically clipped dubstep beats.

Hyperdub digs deeper into the UK Funky undergrowth to uproot two tribal-tek killers from DVA aka Scratcha packaged in a resplendent spot-gloss sleeve. There’s been no small amount of commotion over this 12″ from those in the know, receiving plays from Kode 9′s inner circle – Cooly G, Ikonika etc and players like Oneman to Marcus Nasty and Jackmaster.

Hyperdub give a nod of respect to one of the UKs most influential underground producers with two firin’ tracks from Terror Danjah and DOK. If you’ve been paying attention to the sets of Scratcha, Butterz or Kode 9 in the last few months you’ve no doubt clocked the searing heat of ‘Acid’. It’s got to be one Danjah’s hardest cuts to date, giving a firm nod to ’92 ‘ardkore with Belgian mentasms and stupendous stop/start rhythmic force that makes a clear case for the ‘nuum genetics of Steve Gurley and co being carried through to Grime’s lurching rhythmic swagger.
